3 Improvements the COVID-19 Pandemic May Force

The pandemic may force certain improvements but I’m not sure that it will, because political distractions are doing a rather good job of drawing our focus away from fixing things now.

For instance, we should be ramping domestic manufacturing of PPEs and ventilators permanently to prepare for a likely huge fall spike in COVID-19 infections. Still, we aren’t, which suggests that lessor priorities may not be getting the attention they need either. We tend to excessively focus on blame and not focus enough on avoiding the repetition of mistakes, which will weaken any positive outcomes from this pandemic.

However, in the works right now are three things that may result in a better post-pandemic world. One is video conferencing, which has been on a slow ramp to overnight success since the mid-1960s when it was supposed to become the standard way we communicated.

Another is robotics, which is getting a ton of attention right now, ranging from automated delivery to automated manufacturing.

The third is 3D printing, which has been used impressively for rapid manufacture of some of the things that are needed to keep our first responders safe, and to help speed up the manufacture of critical equipment like ventilators. Both have been in noticeably short supply.

I’ll close with my product of the week: the latest version of HP’s Halo laptop, the Dragonfly, which may be the best laptop currently in the market.

Video Conferencing and Virtual Conferences

I first became interested in video conferencing when I used the AT&T demonstration phones at Disneyland in the 1960s, and I’ve covered it since the mid-80s. We’ve long known that for widespread success, a video conferencing offering needs to be affordable, and it needs to address privacy concerns adequately. No one wants an active camera looking at them all the time. Further, it needs to interoperate across hardware devices.

Video conferencing never made it out of the labs with a dependable product until the 1980s, and then it was used only inside an office. The people in the early trials thought it was mostly so their bosses could spy on them, so it failed.

In the 1990s, video conferencing failed to take off due to the lack of interoperability and horrid user experience, on top of being excessively expensive.

In the 2000s, the technology did get some traction with offerings like FaceTime and WebEx. Still, the lack of interoperability, poor quality video, inability to have side conversations easily, and inadequate security once again led to failure to meet its potential.

Last decade, even though quality improved dramatically, the lack of interoperability still made a video conference the exception rather than the rule, and folks were more likely to get on a plane than to go to a virtual event or to video conference on a regular basis.

One of the arguments for the failure is that humans don’t like change. When given a choice between traveling and video conferencing, most continued to do what they had done and took the flight option. Now we are forced to do video conferencing. For the next year or so, the vendors creating these solutions will be hearing the same complaints about interoperation, the inability to have side conversations, and security.

As a result, the vendors — and we saw an early indication with Google Meetings — now are trying to differentiate with interoperation and security, with side conversations potentially migrating to some kind of integrated social media.

Virtual conferences remain problematic, but the loss of sales potential is forcing developers to look at this problem, and they should be able to field several potential solutions by year-end. We’ll know then if any get this right.

If they do get this right, the need for business travel should be reduced significantly, and video conferencing finally should be able to meet the potential we saw back in the mid-1960s.

Reconsidering Robotics

Robots have been on a slow ramp to replace people in dangerous situations since at least the 1950s. They are used successfully today for things like bomb disposal, exploring where people can’t go (post-disaster building collapses, unsafe mines, outer space).

While there have been attempts to replace both
coffee shops and
fast food chains with robotic alternatives, they haven’t gained much traction.

However, we now are making aggressive efforts to socially distance, and the risk of virus transmission is forcing another look at this technology. Robotic efforts are gaining far more interest.

We are seeing a lot of focus on the rapid development of
robotic delivery solutions,
robotic restaurants, and, I expect,
robotic caretakers. This is on top of the efforts to construct robotic soldiers — some of which are
pretty scary looking).

Many are using technology advancements borrowed from autonomous car efforts to ramp up solutions rapidly, because they can be far more cost-effective than early attempts like Amazon Go, the robotic grocery store chain.

I expect that by the time we have an anti-coronavirus strategy at critical mass, there will be far more robots in customer-facing roles than there would have been had there not been an outbreak.

This also suggests a considerably faster ramp to using autonomous cars instead of humans for services like Uber as well.

3D Printing

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, few people recognized the impact of 3D printing or took its potential to redefine manufacturing seriously. During the outbreak, companies like HP Inc., which has industrial-class 3D printers, and lots of other 3D printer owners stepped up to supply critical safety gear and components, showcasing the time-to-market advantages of this technology.

This critical need has caused manufacturing firms to rethink the use of 3D printers while they look at aggressive ways to eliminate manufacturing lines using people, to avoid another catastrophic plant shutdown.

3D printing shops have far lower employee densities, which has allowed them to continue operating with what appears to be a lower incidence of infection than at more traditional manufacturing facilities. This potentially makes them more resilient not only to this pandemic but the next one as well.

Since we are anticipating a second wave of COVID-19 and more pandemics to come, it’s likely we’ll see increasing efforts to automate factories entirely with integrated 3D printers. The world is pivoting to respond to the now near-constant virus threat.

Wrapping Up

We’ve seen world wars drive extremely rapid advancements in technology in the past. Before World War 1, flying was something you saw at fairs. Then, after two world wars, ordinary people were flying around in jets.

This current war against a virus seems to be having a similar impact. However, it is being offset somewhat by an excessive focus on blame and political maneuvering — both showcasing the critical need for advancements and slowing those advancements.

However, I do expect the result to be significant improvements in video conferencing and virtual events; in robotics, including autonomous vehicles; and in manufacturing automation, particularly with 3D printers.

It may take us up to two years to get through this current crisis, and many of us, sadly, won’t make it to the other end. Those of us who do should find ourselves in a world with far less travel –resulting in far less pollution, by the way; far more robots doing things that otherwise would put humans at risk; and more automated manufacturers that should be able to build far more highly customized products.

I doubt these will be the only silver linings to this dark cloud, because we also are likely to have considerably faster ways to develop anti-pathogen drugs as well. Maybe this could be the last real Pandemic for at least a generation, or ever. We’ll see…

Rob Enderle's Product of the Week

When HP brought out its
HP Elite Dragonfly, I was impressed. It came close to what I considered to be the perfect laptop for me. Then the company informed me who it was designed for, and it was for a woman trailblazer. Now, when I was younger, being girly was thought to be a bad thing, but now women are awesome, so I’m personally benefiting from the advances of the women’s movement.

HP updated this product, and it got even better. Let me explain.

HP Elite Dragonfly Convertible 2-in-1 LaptopHP Elite Dragonfly

What I find interesting is that while this is one of the very few products that took women users into consideration in the tech market, I think it is better than most male-oriented products. The latest version has a built-in Tile tracker so, if it is misplaced, you can easily find it. If you can’t, you still can remote wipe it, so your personal information isn’t compromised. Men lose things, too; we just don’t like to admit it.

The laptop is a beautiful blend of design and capability with what I think is one of the most exciting colors ever put on a production product — a blue/black that I’d love to see on a car. It arguably is the greenest laptop yet, with significant recycled content. The magnesium it uses for the frame is 90 percent recycled, for instance. It passes 19 military specifications for drop and shock, so like that old Timex ad, it will take a beating and keep on ticking — or running in this case.

It has HP’s most robust security, and it is WAN enabled, so if your home WiFi is saturated because the kids are playing games, you can keep working at speed. It doesn’t yet support 5G, however. It is one of the few laptops that supports Wi-Fi 6.

You can get it with the brightest screen in its class (1,000 nits) and the best automatic privacy screen, something HP calls “Sure View Reflect,” which kind of turns the screen into a mirror for those not supposed to be looking at it. (Given the female target demographic, I kind of wonder if a future version might not turn the screen into a temporary mirror for the user at some point.)

In the end, the latest HP Dragonfly may be the perfect notebook someone like me who has to travel a lot and likes to work outdoors. As a result, it is my product of the week.

Far-Right Spreads COVID-19 Disinformation Epidemic Online | Social Networking

By John P. Mello Jr.

May 5, 2020 10:14 AM PT

Far-right groups and individuals in the United States are exploiting the COVID-19 pandemic to promote disinformation, hate, extremism and authoritarianism, according to a think tank report.

“COVID-19 has been seized by far-right groups as an opportunity to call for extreme violence,” states the report, the second in a series on the information ecosystem around the coronavirus, released by the London-based
Institute of Strategic Dialogue.

“This includes mobilization by white supremacist communities as well as the increased prevalence of memes which semi-ironically promote insurrectional violence across a range of social media platforms,” it continues.

The report is based on a combination of natural language processing, network analysis and ethnographic online research.

COVID-19 is becoming an increasingly important topic among far-right groups and individuals, the ISD researchers found. For example, mentions of “corona-chan” — a slang term popular with the extreme right — are increasing significantly across mainstream and fringe social media platforms.

Between February and March, “corona-chan” was used 13,000 times on 4Chan, an imageboard website that attracts far-right types, according to the report. It jumped 375 percent in interactions with corona-chan related posts on Reddit.

Meanwhile, Facebook saw a 1,920 percent increase in interactions using the term during March, while “corona-chan” mentions on Instagram climbed 21.5 percent.

Fear and Uncertainty

Uncertainty and fear can breed disinformation, observed Vincent Raynauld, an assistant professor in the department of communication studies at
Emerson College in Boston.

“There are a lot of polls out there showing that people in the United States are afraid. On top of that, we’re getting different messaging from different governments,” he told TechNewsWorld.

“So based on the information environment, people are very uncertain, very confused and very scared,” Raynauld continued.

“That’s an ideal environment for people to infuse disinformation because people are looking for easy solutions to try to understand what the crisis is about,” he said. “If there were a clear timeline on how we’re going to get out of this crisis, I don’t think people would be as likely to be buying into these explanations, but because there’s so much uncertainty people are buying into them.”

Heavy-handed Government

QAnon conspiracy theorists are using the pandemic to increase their reach online, the ISD report also notes. Theories they’re peddling include that the pandemic is being orchestrated to manipulate U.S. politics, that COVID-19 is a bioweapon, that there is a hidden cure for the virus, and that it is being manipulated to implement martial law.

“Whenever you have a situation where people are unhappy with the government having a heavy hand, and people have enough time on their hands to sit and delve into things on the Internet and follow issues down various rabbit holes, you can get distorted messages that incite anger and frustration,” said Karen North, director of the
Annenberg Program on Online Communities at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

“Conspiracy theorists are always talking about how various groups — especially government groups — are manipulating the world in order to control people,” she told TechNewsWorld. ”

“Now we have a worldwide event that gives them plenty of opportunity to distort what actually happened into a narrative that makes that event look like it was done intentionally and for sinister purposes,” North explained.

“Most of us are saying, ‘We are all in this together because this terrible virus has spread across the world, and we should unite against the virus and support each other,'” she continued. “But for some people, they’re uniting against what they perceive as forces against them, or forces trying to change their lives, such as a heavy-handed government.”

Not Your Boomer’s Boogaloo

Far-right communities have started talking about COVID-19 as an accelerant for a second civil war, also known as “boogaloo,” the ISD report notes. From Feb. 1 to March 28, more than 200,000 posts on social media contained the word “boogaloo.” The most popular hashtag within those posts was “#coronachan.”

Twenty-six percent of the references to “boogaloo” on 4chan relate to the coronavirus, the researchers found.

“While some of these calls appear to be ironic, others should be recognized as legitimate security threats,” the report warns. “This trend has already manifested into real-world violence, with one alleged white supremacist terrorist dying after shootouts with the FBI.”

Antisemitic speech and ideas are being adapted to incorporate the coronavirus, it notes. “Old antisemitic tropes of ‘blood libel’ relating to false claims of ritualistic sacrifice are being fused with a wide range of conspiracy theories which are emerging around COVID-19.”

Uphill Battle

Although social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have made efforts to reduce disinformation on their platforms, they appear to be facing an uphill battle.

“Social media platforms are in this constant fight to catch up with the evolution of fake news, but with the virus and so many people online, I think the level of fake news has increased significantly,” Raynauld said.

“Not only has the volume increased, but the potency, as well,” he added.

With the pandemic raging, social media platforms that to a large degree depend on humans to police their content are finding themselves in a difficult position, noted Marc Faddoul, research scientist at University of California, Berkeley, in a recent article for the Brookings Institution.

Platforms are fighting to contain an epidemic of misinformation, with user traffic hitting all-time records, he pointed out.

“To make up for the absence of human reviewers, platforms largely handed off the role of moderating content to algorithmic systems. As a result, machines currently have more agency over the regulation of our public discourse than ever before,” Faddoul wrote.

“So far, algorithmic systems have proven they can bring precious support in scaling up the enforcement of certain guidelines. However, they also reveal fundamental limits in their ability to capture nuances and contextual specificities,” he noted.

“Our dependence on humans to moderate content will last. By shifting to a more participatory and decentralized model, big tech platforms could make their content moderation pipeline more resilient and adaptable,” Faddoul suggested. “Moderating public forums for half of the planet is simply too big of a challenge for platforms to take on on their own — even with AI.”

Linux Foundation Leads Initiative for Better Digital Trust | Community

The Linux Foundation on Tuesday announced that it will host the Trust over IP Foundation, a cross-industry effort to ensure more secure data handling over the Internet.

This new foundation is an independent project enabling trustworthy exchange and verification of data between any two parties on the Internet.

The ToIP Foundation will provide a robust common standard to give people and businesses the confidence that data is coming from a trusted source. The new protocol will allow them to connect, interact and innovate at a speed and scale not possible today.

The LF is pushing its sponsorship of the ToIP Foundation in order to grow membership, with global pan-industry support from leading organizations with sector-specific expertise.

Founding members include Cloudocracy, Continuum Loop, CULedger, Esatus, Evernym, The Human Colossus Foundation, IBM Security, IdRamp, Kiva, Mastercard, MITRE, the Province of British Columbia and SICPA.

This could be a significant development spurred in part by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the LF. The pandemic is pushing companies worldwide to deal with an increasingly virtual world relying on the Internet and the world’s digital infrastructure more than ever.

Forming the ToIP Foundation underscores the importance of open source and open standards in building an infrastructure for the effective exchange of or access to information, observed Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.

The list of founding members, including IBM, is significant in that they are organizations that have a long association with, and support for, open source, he noted.

“Something COVID-19 is highlighting is just how deeply interconnected businesses, industries, and markets really are,” King told LinuxInsider. “An effort of this sort that failed to incorporate multiple industries would be dead in the water.”

Addresses Enterprise Struggles

Businesses are struggling to protect and manage digital assets and data — a struggle made more difficult in an increasingly complex enterprise environment that includes the Internet of Things, edge computing, artificial intelligence, and much more, according to the LF.

This is compounding the already low consumer confidence in the use of personal data. The result is slowing innovation in areas like digital identity and the adoption of new services that can support humanity.

“In today’s digital economy, businesses and consumers need a way to be certain that data being exchanged has been sent by the rightful owner, and that it will be accepted as truth by the intended recipient,” said Dan Gisolfi, chief technical officer for decentralized identity at IBM Security.

Many privacy-focused innovations are being developed to solve this challenge, but there is no recipe book for the exchange of trusted data across multiple vendor solutions, he asserted.

“The new Trust over IP Foundation marks an evolutionary step which goes beyond standards, specs and code, with the goal of creating a community-driven playbook for establishing ecosystems of trust,” Gisolfi said.

IBM believes that the next wave of innovation in identity access management will be for credential issuers and verifiers to partake in these ecosystems. This process is where trusted relationships are built upon cryptographic proofs, he added.

Crucial Development Need

The level of collaboration around ToIP is significant. These organizations all have much to gain from the ToIP Foundation, and their actions represent a significant push in this area, according to Thomas Hatch, CTO of
SaltStack.

“ToIP has the potential to establish a new trust-based fabric. I am good friends with a few of the technical minds behind this protocol, and it has been very difficult to establish,” he told LinuxInsider.

The current state of ToIP is the culmination of years of work. Bringing together these groups to develop and support the new initiative gives it the potential to establish new ways to create and ensure greater trust online, Hatch added.

Other endeavours have not been as ambitious. This is a culmination of many concepts built into earlier efforts. The goals of the project are to build a new fabric of online trust that can be universally used. Other similar endeavours are not built to cover the broad use case of ToIP, he explained.

Highlighting the Trust Plan

Without a global standard for how to ensure digital trust, trends towards digital distrust are bound to continue, noted the LF. The ToIP Foundation will use digital identity models that leverage interoperable digital wallets and credentials and the new W3C Verifiable Credentials standard to address these challenges.

This approach will enable consumers, businesses and governments to manage risk better, to improve digital trust, and to protect all forms of identity online. The LF’s open governance model enables the ToIP Foundation to advance a combination of technology and governance standards for digital trust in a neutral forum that supports pan-industry collaboration.

“The ToIP Foundation has the promise to provide the digital trust layer that was missing in the original design of the Internet and to trigger a new era of human possibility,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director at the Linux Foundation.

An open governance model that can be integrated into the development of the standards for digital trust is essential where the business, legal and social guidelines for technology adoption impact human trust and behaviour. The combination of open standards and protocols, pan-industry collaboration, and LF’s neutral governance structure will support this new category of digital identity and verifiable data exchange, he explained.

The ToIP Foundation initially will host four working groups. The Technical Stack Working Group and the Governance Stack Working Group will focus on building out and hardening the technical and governance halves of the ToIP stack, respectively.

The Utility Foundry Working Group and the Ecosystem Foundry Working Group will serve as communities of practice for projects that wish to collaborate on the development of ToIP utility networks or entire ToIP digital trust ecosystems.

Continuation in the Works

The LF had much of the architecture of the Trust over IP stack in play internally. So it was only natural to propose that The Linux Foundation host this new project dedicated to “open, open, open” (open standard, open-source, open governance) digital trust infrastructure, a Linux Foundation spokesperson said in comments provided to LinuxInsider by company rep Beth Handoll.

A significant portion of the architecture was generated via developers and contributors to the Linux Foundation Hyperledger projects (specifically Hyperledger Indy, Hyperledger Ursa, and Hyperledger Aries projects). Also, working groups at the Decentralized Identity Foundation, which is also a Linux Foundation project, were involved, the LF source said.

It is absolutely essential — in fact, the ToIP stack is designed to be as cross-industry as the TCP/IP stack that enabled the Internet itself. In fact, the primary purpose of the ToIP stack is to enable cross-domain trust across any two domains — countries, industries, companies, schools, cities, communities, families — noted the LF spokesperson.

The two most closely related LF projects are Hyperledger and the Decentralized Identity Foundation, but there are many more LF projects that already have become interested in the ToIP stack.

One example is the LF Energy project, which is looking at ToIP and digital credentials for verifying each link in a supply chain. This is what John Jordan, executive director of BC Digital Trust Service, Province of British Columbia, calls “verifiable origins.” His team is working on that usage of the ToIP stack, the LF spokesperson said.

Yet Another Internet Standard

Enterprises clearly can benefit from the results of ToIP efforts. Opportunities and challenges never stop changing, so industries and businesses should be in a state of positive evolution, noted Pund-IT’s King.

“As we move toward a future where business IT is driven by hybrid cloud computing, and robust 5G wireless technologies enhance the velocity and volume of data resources, we’re going to need to think about and work with security and related issues in new ways. That’s exactly what the Trust over IP Foundation aims to do,” he said.

This standard provides a new way to communicate over the WAN. It is not just another protocol, remarked SaltStack’s Hatch.

“I see it instead as forging ahead in an area where TCP, TLS and SSL have grown old and new considerations are needed,” he said.

What the Stack Is

The ToIP stack is not a single standard. Rather, it is a definition of a whole stack of standards — at four distinct layers — that are needed not just for technology but also for governance, according to LF.

The first two layers are standards and best practices for governing and implementing the technology needed to establish technical trust — gor example, how to implement cryptography, and protocols for how two machines can talk to each other safely and securely.

The third and fourth layers are standards and best practices for governing and implementing the technology needed to establish human trust — for instance, what is needed for one person or organization to trust another person or organization in the context of a specific relationship or transaction.

Since the ToIP stack is not a single standard, no set timelines for completion or adoption exist. Instead, it will be an evolving set of interoperability specifications, governance templates, and best practices recommendations. In May, the new foundation will formally launch the first four working groups.
